The newly reorganized company began construction of the long-promised line to Tampa through subsidiary companies: the Peninsular Railroad operated the line from the connection with the Florida Railroad at Waldo to Ocala and Silver Springs, while the Tropical Florida Railroad ran from Ocala to Wildwood. In 1872 the Florida Railroad was reorganized as the Atlantic, Gulf and West India Transit Company, still under the control of the Dickerson syndicate. The railroad was auctioned off, and bought back by the Dickerson syndicate for twenty percent of the original value of the bonds. The Dickerson syndicate resumed operation of the Florida Railroad after the war, but with much of the railroad's equipment, facilities and track destroyed or seized, the company did not do well, and defaulted on its bonds to the Internal Improvement Fund in 1866. : 34–37, 40ġ939 image of Cedar Key showing the Florida Railroad's former right of way and trestle remnants Union forces had also destroyed 30 miles of track leading from Cedar Key. In 1864, the Confederate States Army pulled up rails from the Florida Railroad to use on a new rail line from Live Oak, Florida to Lawton, Georgia (now known as DuPont. Shells fired by the USS Ottawa damaged the last train leaving Fernandina, killing or injuring several passengers, and almost killing Senator Yulee. In March 1862 a Union squadron seized Fernandina. The USS Hatteras raided Cedar Key in January 1862, destroying the railroad's rolling stock and buildings. The Florida Railroad was adversely affected by the Civil War. At 156 miles in length, it was the longest railroad to be completed in Florida before the start of the American Civil War. Other towns served by the railroad included Callahan, Baldwin, Waldo and Archer. The line was completed to Gainesville in 1859 and Cedar Key in 1861. Yulee had to surrender a majority interest in the railroad to a northern investment syndicate headed by Edward Dickerson to save the company. By 1858 the rail line was open between Fernandina and Starke, but the Panic of 1857 had left the railroad on the edge of bankruptcy. Construction started in Fernandina in 1855. Yulee decided to complete the line to Cedar Key first, leaving the connection to Tampa for later. The president and chief stockholder of the Florida Railroad was U.S. Mary's River) to Tampa, Florida, with a branch to Cedar Key. In 1853 the Florida Legislature chartered the Florida Railroad to build a 5 ft ( 1,524 mm) gauge rail line from Fernandina (near the mouth of the St. Mary's River and Cedar Key in the Territory of Florida. In 1842 the United States Congress commissioned a survey of a route for a railroad between the St. A railroad across the northern end of the Florida peninsula would allow cargoes from ships in the Gulf of Mexico to be transferred to ships in the Atlantic Ocean, and vice versa, without the risk of passage through the Straits of Florida, while cutting 800 miles off the trip. Prior to the 20th century many ships were wrecked around the southern end of the Florida peninsula. I know a lot about the subject matter, so I tend to get my questions right more often. The pieces are nicer than this photograph makes them look.īut does basing the game around The Lord of the Rings make it better? This version of the "classic" family board game plays much the same as any other edition, except all of the questions are based on the characters and events from Tolkien's world (as seen in the movies by Peter Jackson), and the playing pieces are really rather lovely pawns depicting Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, and Galadriel. The even more obvious answer is: a bloody horrible mess. The obvious answer is: Trivial Pursuit DVD: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition. What happens when you combine something I love ( The Lord of the Rings) with something I hate ( Trivial Pursuit). It is safe to say, I hate Trivial Pursuit.Īnd this leads us to our interesting experiment for the day. (In fact, it is possible for a really good player to win the game in a single turn.) Play against someone really good, and you could be waiting a long time between turns. This is compounded in Trivial Pursuit, as correctly answering a question allows a player to roll and move again. So yes, this makes the game go on forever, especially if, when someone finally lands on the correct space, they get the bloody question wrong.įinally, Trivial Pursuit has the same major flaw that all trivia games have: The person who knows the most has a massive advantage, and is likely to steamroll the opposition. Most of the game is spent wandering backwards and forwards, desperately attempting to land on one of the spaces you need. To win those "cheeses" you have to land on the correct spaces, and you have to land by exact count. Why make a game where most of the time you are answering questions for no reason?Īstute readers may also have noted a second major problem: Roll and move. If you land on any other space on the board, you still get asked a question, but there is no chance of winning a "cheese." However, there is only one space on the board for collecting each type of cheese. There are six different flavours of "cheese," each representing a different type of trivia, and you get the "cheeses" by landing on certain spaces on the board and correctly answering a question from the related category. You see (for those of you who live under a rock), the aim of Trivial Pursuit is to move around the board collecting "cheeses" or "pies" or whatever you want to call them. It is a statement backed up by countless Christmases gathering around with the family to waste hours of the most magical day of the year doing something mundane.įirst of all, you have to answer questions often, but only rarely is there any reason to. Now, that is not a statement I make lightly. You don't need to roll dice and move around a board.Īh yes, Trivial Pursuit. One of the worst trivia games ever made. The winner is the person who answers the most questions correctly. Why? If you want to play a trivia game, ask people a bunch of questions. They introduce pawns, and dice, and boards, and a set of rules, and. However, what I really hate, are trivia games. For example, I have a strong dislike for word games, which I find terminally dull. While thematic games, storytelling games, and deeply strategic games fill me with joy, other types of games fill me with dread. My fondness for fantastic adventures probably stems from my love of The Lord of the Rings (the books and the movies, I don't discriminate), although I find it interesting that many games based on the works of Tolkien are a bit shit. Give me a fantasy setting, a sword to swing, and a dragon to slay, and I am one happy camper. I am a huge fan of thematic games that draw you into a story: Those games that allow you to explore a world with a gradually evolving character, facing insurmountable odds, and triumphing in the face of evil. He has just been asked a tough question, I reckon. Trivial Pursuit DVD: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Editionįor 2-4 victims, who are old enough to watch The Lord of the Rings movies |
